Taufiqurrahman, a 10th-grade student from Raden Umar Said Vocational School looks swiftly when moving the pencil across the monitor screen. He is perfecting one of the characters from the animated film ‘Pasoa the Brave’ in RUS Animation Studio.

He likes to draw since childhood. However, he only felt the touch of advanced technology to create new characters since entering the school in Besito village, Gebog District, Kudus.

Animation Major was introduced at RUS Vocational School in 2015 – 2016. The school have been equipped with a studio with the best facilities, thanks to the collaboration with Djarum Foundation, Autodesk, and Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC). Right now, students are making an animated film ‘Pasoa the Brave’.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by the Head of the Indonesian Creative Economic Agency, Mr. Triawan Munaf, the Program Manager of Indonesia Autodesk Education, Yuli Setiawati, Managing Director of SMBC, Ryuji Nishisaki, Vice President Director of Djarum Foundation, Agus Siswant Wibawa, and the Regent of Kudus, Musthofa.

Triawan said he had visited Pixar and Walt Disney several times. According to him, the studio facilities in RUS Vocational School are almost similar to two of the most famous animated film studios in the world.

“This looks like what I saw at Pixar and Walt Disney. The students must be grateful for having a super-advanced studio like this”, he said. According to him, the animation film sector has a bright future. He said, if worked seriously, it will give a truly positive effect.

The Program Director of Bakti Pendidikan Djarum Foundation, Primadi H. Serad said animation major at RUS Vocational School applies a curriculum which has been developed according to the needs of the current animation industry. Including, making a three-dimensional animated film, or commonly referred to as 3D animation. 

According to him, RUS Animation Studio can do all of the animated film making processes from writing scripts, storyboards, character creation as well as the addition of visual effects and lightings.

“Production process uses Autodesk Maya, a software that is commonly used in making internationally renowned animations, such as Good Dinosaur, Big Hero 6, Frozen and Finding Nemo,” he said.

He added, this vocational school is also supported by well-known professionals in the world animation industry. “There are experienced guest-teachers who have worked as animators in Walt Disney Animation studio”
